Prêt-à-porter
This ring is part of the prêt-à-porter line of the Wearable Sculpture collection. In this series, the theme of Post-Colonial Gold becomes visible.
The soft, almost powdery blue surface is interrupted by fragments of gold that resemble small geological discoveries. The contrast between the matte volume and the shimmering gold creates a quiet tension, as if the object carries a miniature landscape.
Its rounded form subtly refers to the classical cameo ring, which in the 18th and 19th centuries was worn as a miniature sculpture: portraits, symbols and stories carried close to the body. In this ring, that tradition is reinterpreted as abstract sculpture.
Within the idea of Post-Colonial Gold, gold no longer appears merely as a precious material, but as part of a counter-archive in which values are reconsidered. The rings therefore function as anti-jewellery: objects that do not only adorn, but also question value, history and meaning.
In the museum collection, these questions unfold further into a larger counter-archive in which spiritual values are placed in relation to material values.
