CURATED RETAIL

Beyond the Freeport explores what happens when important works of art disappear from public view.

Many works are held in private collections, storage facilities or freeports, making them largely inaccessible to the public, researchers and museums.

The project initially focuses on women artists, whose work has historically been far less visible.

From this research, new ways are developed to make art accessible, visible and open to discussion again.

From Research to Object

Post-Colonial Gold is one of the physical outcomes of Beyond the Freeport.

The collection consists of wearable sculptures — Conversation Pieces — that provide access to a digital environment through a QR code.

Here, the wearer can explore, read and discover more.

This creates a connection between:

artwork · research · object · wearer · digital experience

The physical object is therefore not simply a reproduction or souvenir, but an entry point into a much larger story.

The Museum Shop as Part of the Story

A museum shop does not have to be simply the final stop of a museum visit.

Retail can also be a way for a story to travel further.

A Conversation Piece leaves the museum with the visitor and becomes part of everyday life. Through its digital layer, it remains connected to the original artistic story.

Collaborations

Beyond the Freeport and Post-Colonial Gold can be presented in different ways.

For example as:

  • a special collection around an artist or exhibition
  • a selection of Conversation Pieces for a museum shop
  • a limited museum edition
  • a combination of physical objects and digital storytelling
  • a presentation within an exhibition or public space
  • an immersive or hybrid retail environment

Each collaboration can be adapted to the museum’s collection, audience and context.

Curated Immersive Retail

A broader concept for curated immersive retail is also currently in development.

Within this concept, the Conversation Pieces collection can be combined with products by selected artists, designers and independent labels.

Together, they form one curated museum shop — both physical and digital.

The immersive environment can reveal additional stories, artists, collections and products, while remaining accessible beyond the physical museum.

This creates opportunities to extend the museum shop towards new audiences and international markets.

Different Price Levels

The Conversation Pieces are locally produced by hand and in small quantities.

This allows for flexibility in materials, editions and price levels — ranging from more accessible designs to limited collector pieces.

kunstwerk · onderzoek · object · drager · digitale ervaring
