09 — CLEOPATRA

c. 1611–1612 · Oil on canvas · 117.5 × 182 cm

What is it about?

Cleopatra is shown shortly before her self-chosen death. Following the defeat of Mark Antony and the victory of Octavian, she decides not to be taken to Rome as a prisoner.

Artemisia — or, according to some scholars, her father Orazio — does not depict a spectacular death scene. Cleopatra lies alone. Political defeat, physical vulnerability and the final possibility of self-determination come together in a single image.

The question of attribution is itself significant: specialists continue to debate whether the painting was made by Artemisia or by Orazio.

Where is it now?
Etro Collection, Milan — private collection.

Last seen in public
National Gallery, London, during the major exhibition Artemisia, 2020–2021.

HOW IN CIRCULATION WORKS

CONVERSATION PIECES

FRAGMENTS OF HISTORY

R018a | CLEOPATRA

A sculptural statement ring with a substantial, organically shaped form and a hand-finished gold-toned surface.

Its irregular volume and softly rounded contours retain visible traces of the making process, giving the ring the presence of a small sculptural object.

Measuring approximately 4.5 × 2 cm and rising 2.5 cm in height, the ring has a pronounced physical presence while weighing only 26 grams.

Part of a genderless and ageless collection, the ring is designed to move freely across conventional distinctions of age, gender and style.

Its unique ID and QR code connect the object directly to an artwork and the history surrounding it.

Fashion becomes a carrier of cultural access.

BEYOND THE FREEPORT — ISSUE 02: ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI

R018a | CLEOPATRA is linked to Artemisia Gentileschi’s Cleopatra.

Through its unique ID and QR code, the Conversation Piece opens access to the work and to the wider history surrounding it. Within BEYOND THE FREEPORT, dispersed, inaccessible and overlooked works are brought together within an immersive environment.

The substantial form of CLEOPATRA gives the object its own physical presence while maintaining its connection to the work from which its title and reference emerge.

IN CIRCULATION carries that connection from one wearer to the next.
