Post-Colonial Gold — Coin Ring

Wearable Sculpture

This ring contains an almost sixty-year-old BP coin replica from the 1970s, probably issued around 1971 as part of the BP collection of ancient Greek and Roman coin reproductions. The replica is based on a Carthaginian / Siculo-Punic coin image, most likely derived from a tetradrachm from the 3rd century BCE.

The original coin was probably made of silver and functioned as a real means of payment. It belonged to a world of trade, military economy and power, where metal, image and authority came together in one small object of circulation.

The relief shows a horse with a wheel or chariot motif, with signs below. In Carthaginian visual language, the horse refers to strength, movement, prestige and military presence. What once appeared on a coin as a sign of value and authority is now removed from its economic function and transformed into a sculptural ring.

Within Post-Colonial Gold, the coin is not treated as a nostalgic antique image, but as a trace of shifting value systems: metal, power, circulation, possession and appropriation. The gold-toned surface does not refer to luxury in the traditional sense. It marks a new value system, in which material, history and meaning are carried on the body.

This ring is part of Post-Colonial Gold, a series of wearable sculptures that appear almost archaeological — as if unearthed from a past that has not yet been fully processed. The objects carry fragments of history, extraction, trade and cultural displacement. Nothing is smoothed over. Nothing is resolved.

Handmade. Non-reproducible. Unique.
A different kind of luxury — not what everyone wants, but what no one else has.
