Rachel Ruysch — Focused Abundance

Conversation Piece / Post-Colonial Gold

A transparent structure. A sequence of floating beads. A composition that can be worn as abundance — or reduced to one precise point of focus.

This necklace balances lightness and richness. The transparent cords keep the image open, while the gold-toned, silver-toned, champagne and bronze beads create rhythm, movement and depth. The object can be worn fully layered, as a rich composition across the body, or reduced to a single transparent cord with one bead.

Within Conversation Pieces, this work is dedicated to Rachel Ruysch, one of the most important flower still-life painters in Dutch art history. Ruysch did not paint simple bouquets. Her still lifes appear natural, but they are carefully constructed worlds. Flowers, fruits, insects, light and shadow are brought together with extraordinary precision.

Her compositions often show elements that could not exist together in reality at the same moment. Flowers from different seasons, exotic plants, fruits and insects are arranged into one convincing image. In that sense, Ruysch did not simply record nature. She constructed a new reality from existing elements.

That is where the dialogue with this necklace begins.

The necklace works as a modular composition. Each cord and bead can be read as a separate element, but together they create a larger whole. Like Ruysch’s paintings, the strength is not only in abundance, but in the way abundance is organised. Nothing needs to be heavy. Nothing needs to be excessive. The power lies in placement, rhythm and attention.

The value of this piece is Focused Abundance: the ability to bring many elements together without losing clarity.

In the full version, the necklace becomes a layered composition of light, metal tones and movement. In the minimal version, one transparent cord with one bead becomes a single focus point. That small gesture carries the same idea in a quieter form: one detail can open a whole world.

For today, this value feels especially relevant. We live in a time of visual overload, fast consumption and endless combinations. Rachel Ruysch reminds us that composing is not the same as adding more. A strong image requires knowledge, selection and focus.

Within Post-Colonial Gold, this object translates that lesson into a wearable system. It is accessible, modular and light, but through its unique ID and QR code it connects to a deeper layer: Rachel Ruysch, Dutch flower painting, botanical knowledge, constructed nature and the value of learning how to look.

No flower souvenir.
A wearable composition of focus, rhythm and abundance.

Each piece is handmade and unique. Through a unique ID and QR code, the object is connected to a digital layer: the artist, the value, the material reference and the context behind the work.
