Wearable Sculpture — Post-Colonial Gold
The Object
This wearable sculpture presents a circular plate whose surface is covered with a dense organic relief. Small protruding forms spread across the surface like a field of cells or seeds, converging toward a central rising form.
The ring does not resemble traditional jewelry. Instead, it appears closer to a small sculptural landscape. The raised central element emerges from the textured surface as if it were growing out of the material itself.
The object suggests a body-like presence rather than an ornament.
Material
The surface of the sculpture is rough and tactile. The metal absorbs light softly, allowing the relief structure to create shadows that emphasize the depth of the pattern.
The repeated organic shapes evoke processes of growth and accumulation. The material appears almost biological, as if the surface were alive or slowly forming itself over time.
The ring transforms the hand into a site where a small sculptural body can exist.
Core Idea
For centuries gold represented power, wealth, and possession. Precious materials served as visible markers of status and authority.
Post-Colonial Gold proposes another system of value. Instead of material wealth, the series explores values that arise from human experience, emotion, and psychological depth.
This work addresses the value of inner emotional life.
Meaning
The surface of the sculpture resembles a field of organic forms that gather toward a central emergence. The structure evokes the tension between interior and exterior, between what is contained within the body and what becomes visible.
The ring does not represent a specific figure. Instead, it suggests a living structure shaped by internal forces.
The object becomes a small sculptural metaphor for emotional intensity — something that grows, accumulates, and eventually surfaces.
In Dialogue with Louise Bourgeois
Louise Bourgeois explored the relationship between body, memory, and emotion throughout her career. Her sculptures often appear organic and bodily, suggesting growth, vulnerability, and psychological tension.
Rather than representing the body directly, Bourgeois frequently created forms that evoke bodily presence through texture, repetition, and organic structure.
This sculpture resonates with that language. The textured surface and emerging central form suggest a living structure shaped from within.
The object reflects Bourgeois’ idea that sculpture can give form to internal emotional states.
Within Post-Colonial Gold
Post-Colonial Gold proposes an alternative system of value in which material wealth no longer defines worth.
Across the series, attention shifts toward forms of meaning that emerge from human life and experience.
Within this system the present work represents the value of inner emotional reality — the invisible psychological forces that shape how people exist in the world.
Artist Reflection
This sculpture began with the idea that emotional experience often grows beneath the surface before it becomes visible.
By allowing the surface of the object to develop a dense organic structure, the work suggests a form that slowly accumulates energy from within.
The central emergence becomes the point where that internal force appears.
The ring turns the hand into a place where a small landscape of emotion can exist.
