The Object

This wearable sculpture contains a fragment of blue-and-white ceramic, embedded within an irregular gold-toned structure. Only a small part of the original image remains visible. The fragment is not restored or completed, but held as it is: incomplete, exposed, and historically charged.

Material

Gold does not function here as ornament or luxury, but as a frame. It directs attention toward what remains. Blue-and-white ceramics circulated through early global trade networks, along routes also shaped by the movement of gold, resources, and people. These objects carried aesthetic value, yet they were inseparable from economic and colonial systems. Within the ring, the fragment becomes object, artifact, and trace at once.

Core Idea

For centuries, gold served as a measure of power, wealth, and empire, sustained by systems of extraction, possession, and colonial expansion. Post-Colonial Gold shifts that measure: value is no longer located in the material itself, but in what the object carries — history, memory, fracture, and human experience.

Meaning

Objects often appear neutral, beautiful, or decorative, yet many have moved through systems of power and inequality. By isolating a fragment within gold, this sculpture makes those layers visible. It does not resolve them, but holds them in place.

Within Post-Colonial Gold

Each wearable sculpture embodies a human value. Gold no longer measures what something is worth, but reveals what has been overlooked. Across the series, value shifts from material to meaning.

Artist Reflection

The fragment is not repaired and remains deliberately incomplete. Gold does not restore it; it exposes it.
