#This ring is based on the form of a classic engagement ring, with a large pink diamond set in a precious setting. The model is immediately recognisable and strongly associated with ideas of love, status and value.
In this work, that form is deliberately disrupted. The stone is not clear or perfectly cut, but irregular and materially present. The setting does not support the stone in an elegant way, but seems to hold it with some effort.
As a result, the meaning of the object shifts. What would normally express certainty and value feels less convincing here. The ring remains recognisable as a symbol, but no longer functions as expected.
By referencing the engagement ring, the work makes visible that the value of such an object is not self-evident, but depends on cultural conventions and repetition. By slightly destabilising this form, the underlying system becomes apparent.
The humour is not in a joke, but in that shift. You immediately recognise what it is, and at the same time realise that it no longer quite works.
