🌿 Provenance

This chair likely dates from the late 1950s or early 1960s – a period when rural life in Northern Italy was beginning to shift. In the rolling hills around Nizza Monferrato – now a UNESCO World Heritage site – not only farming families made their home, but also city dwellers from Genoa, Milan, and Turin, seeking a quiet retreat in the countryside. It’s quite possible this chair once belonged to such a weekend residence, thoughtfully furnished in a style that embraced both simplicity and refinement.

According to the seller, however, the chair came from a local winemaking family and was used for many years on the veranda of their farmhouse. Both stories are plausible – and that quiet ambiguity only adds to the charm and mystery of the piece.

What is certain is its craftsmanship: the construction suggests it was made by hand in a small regional workshop using locally sourced rattan. It is durable yet light, with flowing lines – not mass-produced, but shaped with care and intention. A chair built to breathe with the rhythm of the land and the passing of time.

Description & Function

This rocking chair is a rare sculptural object, handwoven from natural rattan. The design masterfully blends comfort and elegance: a subtly curved seat rests on generous, arched runners that provide a gentle, soothing motion.

With its airy open weave and asymmetric curves, it fits seamlessly into both bohemian interiors and modern eclectic spaces. More than a chair – it’s a statement piece.

Ideal for a covered terrace, reading nook, or as a striking element in a gallery-like setting.
